X11 and 8-bit Color

p>Joanna Thomas-Osip at Las Campanas Observatory emailed with a helpful tip on getting ximtool to work with Apple’s X11. You need to start up X11 from the command line like so:

% /Applications/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11 -depth 8

p>You still may need to tweak ximtool itself by using the -maxColors flag as specified on the X11IRAF page. I will add this to the FAQ shortly.
