Panther is Coming…
October 9th, 2003 by Marcos
The countdown has begun to the October 24th release of MacOS X 10.3 “Panther.” The new version of MacOS X will include the final release of Apple’s X11, which does include a full-screen mode. A site visitor who has a preview of 10.3 installed tells me that IRAF, ds9, and x11iraf all appear to work fine in MacOS 10.3. No weird symbol definition changes that caused problems in xterm and xgterm in 10.2. Also, rumor has it Panther produces large speed improvements on the new PowerMac G5s.
A mention in a Macintouch report on astronomy software caused a huge spike in traffic propelling this site to over 5000 hits over the last week or so. The report has some interesting discussion; one piece of software mentioned there is DarkAdapted - a very cool utility that can totally turn your Mac screen dark red - handy when you’re out a telescope and would like to keep your night vision. It works just like you would like it to, and is available for MacOS 9, OS X, and Windows.
I still have every intention of putting together a new page dedicated to Mac/UNIX tips, hints, and links to software that I use and think other Mac astronomy types would find useful. I drop in a hint on this page every now, but it should really be consolidated.
