More Notes about Panther

p>It partially breaks the IRAF Button, in that the IRAF Button looks for Apple’s X11 in the wrong place. I’ll fix this soon, and release the new version of the Button that has some additional improvements. I’ve gotten very little feedback about the IRAF Button and I don’t plan on doing much more once I get it working with Panther. Please email me if you use it!

p>Also, in Panther I’ve noted some improved network performance. For one, if you disconnect from the network with a mounted network volume, the Finder won’t go crazy and bring your Mac to its knees. It calmly tells you now that the network volume is not responding and then prompts you to disconnect as it retries for 120 seconds. Very nice.

p>I have used Synk to backup my critical documents over the network to my Desktop Mac, and it used to take forever to figure out what had changed, to the point that it was almost faster to just copy over everything than let Synk figure out what needed to be copied. Now it works as smoothly as backing up to my iPod.

p>Apple’s X11 in Panther supports 8-bit color, in its preferences, so you can run ximtool, though with some side effects. By the way, does anyone know how to get IRAF to be aware that ds9 supports more than 4 display frames?
