Apple Laptops abound at AAS Meeting in Atlanta

January 7th, 2004 by Marcos

Here’s a live report from the 203rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Atlanta. There’s not much IRAF news or anything (though two people have mentioned this web site to me.) The remarkable thing is the over-representation of iBooks and Powerbooks at the meeting.

AAS has provided wireless internet connections and Apple laptops abound in the area outside the main poster exhibition hall. Sometimes Macs have made up almost all of the laptops seen around the area. It seems to almost never be below half.

Why currently here in the “internet cafe” area I do see quite a few PC laptops and only three macs, this may be because I’m near the area where they have wired ethernet plugs. Perhaps effortless wireless connectivity is why so many Mac users are more visible in the non-Internet-specific areas of the conference.

In any case, the abundance of Mac laptops is quite striking. Powerbooks do seem to outnumber iBooks. It would seem the Macintosh is doing quite well amongst professional astronomers.
