p>Douglas Long sent in his opinion about the FITS Liberator plug-in. You can check out his results and comments at his blog entry on the plug-in.

p>I’m trying to make a trackback ping but the internet is remarkably devoid of how that works exactly. I finally figured out some crude manual way of doing this before I found a more elegant way to go about it.

p>Update. Here’s the word I just got moments ago from Bill Joye, over at Harvard SAO/HEAD.
ds9 version 3.0.1 is now available at:
http://hea-www.harvard.edu/RD/ds9/
NOTE: darwin and linuxppc ports will be available at 8pm EST.
this version fixes a problem with iraf iis support which would sometimes
result in a blank screen.
So, once I see that this file is working, I guess I can make an installer for it. Though, it’s pretty trivial to install now – since there are no library files to put anywhere.

p>I got an email today from a user having trouble with IRAF and the new ds9 3.0 binary. It would seem that when using ds9 as a display client for IRAF, the display command would appear to function properly only that ds9 would show nothing but purple and not the image in question.
<
p>So, if anyone out there has gotten ds9 3.0 to work with IRAF on MacOS X, let me know. So far we’re 0 for 2. Both machines tested so far were running Panther, one with IRAF 2.12.1 and mine with IRAF 2.12.2.

p>There is a new free ESA/ESO/NASA plug-in for Photshop called FITS Liberator. It works with Photoshop 7.0 or ES and with MacOS X10.2 or higher. I lack a copy of Photshop, so I haven’t tested it, but it may prove useful, though I don’t know if it offers the kind of fine control that I describe in my Crab nebula post.
<
p>Anyway, it’s certainly worth checking out. If anyone has any experience with the plug-in, let me know.

p>There’s a new version of IRAF out, but doesn’t appear of much use to MacOS X users. To quote/paraphrase the announcement email:
The IRAF V2.12.2a patch is primarily a bugfix release for GEMINI package developers and is also being made available to resolve problems in specific applications or with specific platforms. See below for details on who should upgrade.
We RECOMMEND this patch for
- GEMINI Package Developers
- Sites which use the FITS kernel heavily
- Users of the LNUX PC-IRAF architecture
<
p>As such, I am unlikely to put out a .pkg installer for this version any time soon. Those needing to patch to 2.12.2a can do so the manual way, which it turns out involves re-writing all your old files…
One way to upgrade IRAF to V2.12.2a is to
do a full installation using the AS/IB/NB distribution files found in the
‘patch2a’ subdirectory of each system. Since this will replace your existing
system, sites should diff/merge selected locally customized files from DEV
(hosts, tapecap, graphcap, imtoolrc, devices.hlp, etc.) and HLIB (extern.pkg,
mkiraf.csh, login.cl, zzsetenv.def) as is recommended in the installation
guide.
