Where I worked between undergrad and grad, people transitioned over to Macs very quickly because the tech support people washed their hands of Macs- meaning that if you wanted new software you could install it yourself in a timely fashion.</p> <p>Of course I think some of the numbers would be higher if you break through the mental block some older faculty types have with Macs. When I started grad school I was given a Linux box. Whne it became apparent that we needed things like more disk space etc which pointed to getting a new computer, I lobbied for a Mac to be put in the budget for my Spitzer proposals. My advisor was firmly against it as he's still of the Unix/SunBlades are fabulous camp. So instead I've rebelled and am doing my thesis in absentia at my former workplace using Mac and have accreted an iMac for the rest of my dissertation work and just yesterday bought a Macbook to celebrate officially being a PhD candidate.</p> <p>I think there is also an argument on price points- it's cheaper to buy a Linux box if you're willing to skimp whilst there is no such thing as skimping with Macs. Now why some people insist on buying SunBlades as desktops still I don't understand- admin'ing a Mac is far easier and last I checked it was actually cheaper to buy a G5/MacPro than a comparable SunBlade.</p> Somehow that percentage doesn’t surprise me.
