Installing Xcode

August 27th, 2008 by admin

A friend recently needed a Fortran compiler, and I pointed her to the useful high performance computing. However, things didn’t work and that’s because the program also needed to Apple’s developer tools – which include a compiler, etc. – to install properly.

Xcode is usually included somewhere when you buy a new Mac. Either [...]

IRAF 2.14 Available – Installers forthcoming here.

December 4th, 2007 by admin

IRAF 2.14 has been announced and is available for download. The Mac (PPC and Intel) versions appear to work properly on both Leopard and Tiger. I’ll try and have installers made for these today. Certainly, I can test the Intel one easily but it’s harder for me to test the PowerPC version [...]

Some unofficial improvements to X11 on Leopard

November 7th, 2007 by admin

No full screen yet, but some progress is being made with Apple’s X11, though not officially coming from Apple.com yet.

I’m pleased to announce that I’ve posted source and binaries on Xdarwin.org for Xquartz 1.2a7. Since 1.2a6, the following issues have been resolved: JIS (Japanese) keyboards are now correctly [...]

Apple's X11 User Mailing list

November 1st, 2007 by admin

You can subscribe and look at the archives to Apple’s X11 User’s mailing list here. Ben Byer has been doing some heroic all hours work to try and fix some problems in X11 in Leopard, mostly from switching code bases and other issues. It’s pretty impressive to see Apple’s staff interacting directly with [...]

X11 Full Screen Support broken in Leopard, other changes, using Tiger's X11…

October 29th, 2007 by admin

Updated at the bottom | Second Update

So, here’s the quasi-official word from Ben Byer, one of Apple’s x11 developers on Apple’s x11-users list.

Biggest architectural change in Leopard for X11: Switched from XFree86 codebase (based on, IIRC, X11R6.8) to X.org codebase (X11R7.2) Biggest user-visible change: launchd support for X11. The only [...]

Easier way to install Grace

August 5th, 2007 by admin

The wonderful High performance computing for Mac site has pre-compiled binaries for Grace and the motif library on which it depends. This is perhaps easier than the compile-fest that is required to get it working via Fink on an Intel-based Mac. Of course, for reasons that remain unclear to me, people appear to [...]

Why do Mac users use Powerpoint and Firefox?

January 20th, 2007 by admin

I’ve noticed a reasonable number of Macintosh users who, when giving a presentation, use Powerpoint rather than Apple’s Keynote. Furthemore, there is another group (with some overlap) who use Firefox(not even the more Mac-like Camino).

Obviously, these are matters of personal preference – but I wonder how many Mac users use Firefox because they have [...]

The Future of IRAF

July 10th, 2005 by admin

<

p>So, we now have an official word on upcoming changes to IRAF support. The leaked news of changes to IRAF certainly generated some discussion, and some emails. Several questions remain, for me, however in light of this news from NOAO.

<

p>It’s certainly understandable that NOAO has in mind to take data reduction at its [...]

PATH variable in the bash shell

November 3rd, 2003 by admin

Okay, so you decided to stick with the bash shell. Here’s how to change your path. Edit the .bashrc file in your home directory (or create one) and then add a line like this:

PATH=/usr/local/bin:~/bin:$PATH

My friend and bash fan Colby gave me this tidbit. Something all bash users probably know. [...]
