X11IRAF

So, this name is confusing – “X11IRAF”. It refers to a collection of programs that run in X11 that IRAF users typically want to run. You don’t necessarily need these programs, but if you’ve run IRAF before, then you’ll want them. X11IRAF includes:

  • xgterm
  • ximtool
  • other things that I’m not sure anyone uses

xgterm has much better graphics abilities than xterm. ximtool, well, I prefer ds9 but some still like ximtool.

These programs are installed in /usr/local/bin and don’t involve using the IRAF user. My installer for X11IRAF has to be authenticated, as /usr is not writable by anyone but root, generally.

You can get X11IRAF – now even for Intel Macs – on the download page
